Art in any medium can start with a photograph. Digital cameras make it possible for you to capture a scene and immediately view it in two dimesions. You can then choose to stay in the computer or use your image as a guide for exploring further means of expression.
With creative control, you can mirror your imagination and share a vision that moves the viewer to feel. In class, you may begin the project at the time of capture or start by exploring the possibilities of a picure from your libray. You begin to build a work of art that communicates an emotion, experience or influence.
Whether an image is in
color or a sepia tone can give you a sense of time. You can create monochromatic
images to match a mood or to coordinate the picture with the theme in a presentation
or room where it will be displayed.
Photoshop can be an amazing
tool for those of us seeking perfection in our view of the world and how
we see and show ourselves. It is rewarding to see and hear a loved one or
client actually smile and laugh at their own picture because you have presented
it in a way that flatters and enhances the personality. It is often said
that the camera puts on 20 pounds by compressing the image into two dimensions.
I feel perfectly justified in taking it back off in Photoshop and showing
the person as I see them in real life. I can't think of a single reason
why a Bride must live with a temporary skin blemish for the rest of her
life in her Wedding Photos. Digital photography and portrait editing has
changed the Portrait photography business.
Low Light Photography has always been a challenge and now you can color balance after the fact. White balance issues can be taken care of with the correct custom setting in your camera or later in the RAW file processor.
Architectural photography has its own challenges with perspective issues and point of view. Much of the correction that use to be done with lenses can now be accomplished with software
You have
fewer rejects when you look at your image as a digital asset that just needs
a little tweaking.
With digital photography, you can begin to collect images for your
digital library to provide choices in your future art projects.
Distracting poles and objects can ruin an otherwise beautiful picture. Look at all four corners of any composition. You can now go ahead and push that shutter button, knowing that you can remove unwanted objects later.
Before & After
Embrace all that is digital in creating art and learn to how to share your view of the world. Before you can do any of this, you must first learn how to "see". In class you learn design, composition and control of your tools to get the best image possible before ever taking it into Photoshop.
Painters and artists in the past have disavowed photographic images as true art. Our patience at waiting for the best light and choosing the most aesthetic angle to express the beauty of the subject seemed less important because we could push a button to capture it. We who spent hours in the darkroom, molding our images with a sculptor's hand, felt just a little sad in knowing that there were painters and artists who could not open their minds just a crack and share the joy of our experience with these new tools.
There are now photography "purists" who say Photoshop is cheating. Photoshop is just tool that helps open those creative dreams and shadows that live in our minds. It more resembles a collaboration of the painters and artists with the photographers who now have way more buttons to push!

Esthetic Improvements Using Photoshop
You can esthetcially improve your images. Improvement is purely subjective and you can choose what pleases you. Yesterday's perfect flower is ravaged by time or weather and you want to show the world how you remembered seeing it. Both images may be acceptable and you have more choices available when you master photoshop tools and techniques.
